Transition into Yr R
Year R EYFS Transition Process
We are excited to support your child's transition into Year R to ensure they feel happy and confident as they begin their time at Halterworth Primary School. Below is an overview of our comprehensive transition process, designed to provide a smooth and positive start for both children and families.
New Parents Presentation
We invite all new parents to attend an information session hosted by our head teacher, Year R staff, and admin team. During this session, you'll have the opportunity to:
- Meet our dedicated staff and learn about our school's ethos and values.
- Receive valuable information about the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and daily routines.
- Hear from representatives of our school kitchen (HC3S), School Nursing team, and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).
- View samples of the school uniform and obtain details on where to purchase them.
Teddy Bears' Picnic
You will be invited to join us for a delightful Teddy Bears' Picnic on the school field (weather permitting). This event offers a wonderful opportunity for children and parents to:
- Bring a blanket and a picnic tea to share with their child.
- Introduce their child's favourite teddy bear to new friends.
- Enjoy a relaxed and informal setting to meet other families and staff.
Informal Story Time Sessions
Come along with your child for a 15-minute story time session, either in the classroom or out on the school field. These sessions are designed to:
- Help children become familiar with their new surroundings and teachers.
- Encourage a love of reading and spark their imagination through engaging stories.
- Provide a relaxed environment for children to socialise with their peers.
Parents and Pupil Stay and Play Sessions
We offer two types of Stay and Play sessions to support your child's transition:
Parents and Pupil Stay and Play:
- Your child is invited to spend time in their new classroom, exploring and playing with various activities.
- Parents are encouraged to stay and engage with their child, fostering a sense of comfort and familiarity.
Parents and Pupil Stay and Play with H.S.A Hospitality:
- Your child is invited to spend 45 minutes in their new classroom, participating in fun activities.
- While the children are engaged, parents can enjoy coffee and biscuits, courtesy of the H.S.A (our PTA). This is a great opportunity to connect with other parents and learn more about the school's community.
Home Visits
To ensure a personalised transition, our Year R teachers will visit you and your child at home (or at school if preferred). During these visits, we aim to:
- Establish a positive relationship with your child in a familiar and comfortable setting.
- Discuss any specific needs, interests, or concerns you may have.
- Gather valuable insights to tailor our approach to supporting your child's transition.
We look forward to welcoming you and your child to our school and supporting you every step of the way on this exciting journey into Year R!
A Day in the Life in Year R EYFS
Welcome to Year R! Here’s a glimpse into the engaging and enriching experiences your child will enjoy each day in Year R at Halterworth Primary School.
Morning Activities
The day begins with a warm welcome from our friendly staff. Children arrive and greet their teachers and friends, creating a positive and happy start to the day. They then engage in morning activities that help them settle in and prepare for the day's learning.
Putting Belongings Away
Children take responsibility for their belongings by hanging up their coats, placing their bags in their designated areas, and organising their personal items. This routine helps develop independence and organisational skills. The children then choose their lunch using a photo menu or place their lunch box from home on the shelf.
Explore and Learn Time
During this child-initiated time, children can explore a range of stimulating activities and learning areas, both indoors and outdoors. They can choose to engage in role play, construction, creative arts, or a wide range of activities inside and outside, fostering their curiosity and love for learning. The children are set challenges to complete during the explore and learn sessions and complete some focused tasks with Year R staff.
Phonics
Phonics sessions are a vital part of our daily routine. Through engaging a
nd interactive activities, children develop their early reading and writing skills though our Read Write Inc phonic programme. They learn letter sounds, blending, and segmenting, setting a strong foundation for literacy.
Independent Snack Cafe
Ch
ildren are encouraged to visit our independent snack cafe, where they can choose from a variety of healthy snacks and milk or water. This self-service approach promotes independence, decision-making, and social interaction supported by an adult to develop their cutting and pouring skills.
Playing Outside
Out
door play is an essential part of our EYFS curriculum. Children have access to a well-equipped outdoor area where they can run, climb, build, explore nature, and engage in imaginative play. Outdoor play supports physical development and well-being.
Lunch in the School Hall
Lunch is a special time for children to come together in the school hall. They can choose from a selection of nutritious meals, carefully prepared by our school kitchen. Lunchtime provides an opportunity for children to develop social skills and enjoy a well-balanced meal.
Maths Session
In our engaging maths sessions, children explore mathematical concepts through hands-on activities and practical experiences. They develop their counting, sorting, and problem-solving skills, laying a strong foundation for future learning.
Storytime
At the end of the day, children gather for a cosy story time session. Teachers read captivating stories that stimulate imagination, language development, and a love for books. This calming activity helps children wind down and reflect on their day.
Through the week the children engage in a wide range of activities such as Music, PE, visiting the library, RE, forest school, handwriting and many other exciting opportunities.
We look forward to welcoming your child to Year R and providing them with a joyful and enriching educational experience each day!
